Effects of a Token System on Increasing Water Consumption in Adults with a Developmental Disorder

Abstract

Adequate hydration is a critical but often overlooked component of health promotion. This study evaluated the impact of a behavior-analytic intervention on water intake among participants in the Fit 4 All wellness program. A structured assessment was used to establish baseline levels of daily water consumption, followed by an intervention incorporating goal setting, preference assessments, and reinforcement strategies to encourage increased intake. Data were recorded daily and analyzed to evaluate changes in fluid consumption across the study period. Results indicated that participants demonstrated consistent increases in water intake relative to baseline, suggesting that behavior-analytic strategies can effectively promote hydration as part of a broader wellness framework. Findings highlight the potential of scalable, evidence-based interventions to target simple but meaningful health behaviors.
